Cottage Restoration Project

The BHPS was given a unique opportunity to prevent the demolition of, what we believe is, an original campground cottage, by the generous donation by Burt Sturrup and Kim Shelley of a cottage located on Griffin Street.  The cottage dimensions correspond to those of the tent platforms on which the first campground cottages were built and we have postcards and photos showing the cottage from as early as1907.  We plan to research its history and to restore the cottage.

The Board of Overseers generously agreed to allow us to locate the cottage in Scribner Park. Fred Scribner was an overseer of the Northport Village Corporation from 1933-1953.  Thus, he knew the cottage in its better days.  Fred loved Bayside and would undoubtedly be glad to see the cottage restored to its prime condition, which is what the BHPS plans to do.

Already so many people have helped with this project.  Jackie Facey and Joe Reilly first suggested the possibility of acquiring the cottage.  Burt Sturrup offered to donate it to the BHPS.  Beverly Crofoot did all the planning for the move. Martha Borgeson made the presentation of our plans to the Board of Overseers who voted to allow us to go ahead.  Bob Allen moved the cottage to its present location, donating a major part of the cost of the move to the BHPS.  Central Maine Power Company also donated the cost of moving the electric power wires so the cottage could be moved safely.  Richard Brockway and Robert Sherman will plan the restoration efforts.  Of course we will restore the exterior of the cottage first. Then we hope to refinish the interior and furnish it with typical Bayside cottage furniture.  We envision the cottage as both a historical exhibit and as a Bayside history information center.

In the charter of the Bayside Historical Preservation Society its purpose is  “to bring together and educate people interested in (1) preserving the history of Bayside (or Northport Village Corporation as it is otherwise known) and (2) preserving the features which give Bayside its unique historical character.” This Cottage Restoration Project serves both parts of this purpose.  Anyone who wants to help either by volunteering or making a donation should write to:

Update: November 20, 2002

t their October meeting, the Northport Village Corporation Overseers approved a site, fronting on Pleasant Street, for the permanent location of the cottage recently donated to the Bayside Historical Preservation Society.  The cottage will remain at its temporary location near Scribner Park until spring and as soon as the permanent site has been prepared it will be moved to the Pleasant Street location  and restoration work will begin.

The work will be done in two phases. The first phase will be devoted to restoring the exterior of the cottage. This will include repairing and reshingling the roof, replacing missing battens and any damaged boards on the walls, painting the exterior, building a handicap accessible entrance at the rear of the cottage, building a porch and bringing electric power to the cottage. The current estimate of the cost of  this first phase, which is planned to be completed in the fall of 2003, is $10,000. Dick Brockway and Bob Sherman are in charge of Phase 1.

Anyone willing to help them should e-mail Zhuntoon@aol.com and your name will be passed on to them. Anyone wishing to donate to the Cottage Restoration Fund should send a check to:
