COMMUNITY HALL REFURBISHMENT

Article Contributed by Marge & Dick Brockway

A group of volunteer workers under the direction and leadership of Alden Badershall have just finished this year’s work on refurbishing the basement of the community hall on Shore Road . The old basement has been completely transformed from a dusty and dark repository for unwanted items into a brightly lit meeting room with carpeted floor and room for over 100 people.

Entering through the double doors, one is presented with a brightly painted hallway with artwork and historical displays, that leads past the new heating system and utility closet to the large double doors to the meeting room. The hall continues on to the spotlighted display of the old hand-pulled fire apparatus, and on to the village offices.

When first proposed to the Board of Overseers in August, the project schedule was to get the basement insulated, the heating system installed, and a partition around the furnace room completed this fall. The meeting room and hall partitions were scheduled for completion next spring, along with the painting and carpeting of the floor. But thanks to the efforts of the many volunteer workers, the project has been brought to the point of completing the meeting room partitions, painting all the ceilings and walls and carpeting the meeting room floor. Even the electrical service to the community hall has been upgraded. All this well ahead of the proposed schedule and below budget.

The list of volunteers who supported the restoration effort is presented to the right. Each of them brought to the project a special talent. Our thanks and appreciation goes out to each of them for a job well done.

Although the project is yet to be completed (it is lacking some trim, interior doors and a few light fixtures), the meeting room was christened with the well attended meeting of the Board of Overseers on Sunday, October 12. One notable improvement of the new meeting space is the improved acoustics.
