Northport Yacht Club Sailing School Starts (NYC Clubhouse; Registration at 9 AM) Weekly program offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings throughout the summer. All children 9 and older may participate for a week or for the whole summer. Swimming test is required for new students. Report to the NYC Clubhouse by 9 AM Monday, with a personal flotation device if you have one. Great Schooner Race (Islesboro to Rockland) Maine’s tall ship fleet gathers for an exciting race from Islesboro to Rockland, followed by a festive Awards Ceremony/Party with live music. This year marks the 39th anniversary of the Great Schooner Race, North America’s largest annual gathering of tall ships! Pre-Race festivities include fireworks and small boat races. Raft-Up! Northport Yacht Club Kids’ Games & Waterslide (Ruggles Park; Starting at 10 AM) 10 AM toddler games, craft table, and basketball court games; 11 AM field games; 11:45 greased watermelon (at the swim float); waterslide follows. This year, in addition to the NYC’s terrific games and events, a scavenger hunt and several activities reminiscent of Bayside’s first carnival in 1914 are being planned in celebration of Bayside’s Centennial. There will be a mini-lantern decorating activity for kids (see Illumination Saturdays).
