Smoke Testing

The Northport Village Corporation and its representatives will be conducting smoke tests of the sanitary sewers beginning on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 and ending on Friday, September 30, 2005.

The tests will be conducted starting north to south of the village and will assist us in locating breaks and defects in the sewer system. During the test, you might see smoke coming from vent stacks on buildings and from holes in the ground. Don’t be alarmed. The smoke has no odor, is non-toxic, non staining, does not create a fire hazard, and will dissipate in a few minutes.

Before we conduct the smoke test, please pour water into your basement floor drains if you have one and into any unused sinks to fill the drain traps. If this is not done, smoke could enter your building through the drain.

If smoke should enter your building during the test, it could mean that there are defects in the plumbing that could allow DANGEROUS SEWER GAS to enter. Note the location of the smoke and call our representative at 338-0751 and someone will meet with you to discuss what should be done to correct the problem. Open doors and windows to ventilate any smoke that enters the building.

Please notify us at 338-0751 of your location before we conduct the test if you have any of the following situations during the test:

1.      Dogs, birds, or other pets that will be confined alone in the building

2.      A person who will be alone and is an invalid or will be sleeping

3.      Any individuals with respiratory problems who will be in the building

4.      Elderly persons who will be alone and might be alarmed or confused if they see smoke

The smoke testing is part of an Inflow & Infiltration Study the NVC is being required to perform by the Maine DEP. The information gained from the study will be used to improve your sewer service and reduce environmental impacts. Some customers of the NVC should expect additional work on this project in the upcoming months, including a sewer services inspection. Additional information about this task will be provided at a later date.

If you have any of the above situations or have questions regarding the smoke test, call 338-0751. Representatives of the NVC performing the test will have identification badges.
